Why “dog friendly” is a lie until you’re at the door
Most directories treat “dog friendly” as a yes/no tick. In reality there are at least four different policies hiding behind that tick: dogs welcome inside; dogs in the beer garden or on the terrace only; dogs at the manager’s discretion on the day; and “assistance dogs only”, which gets mislabelled as dog friendly all the time.
In a climate where it rains for half the year, “chairs outside and a bowl of water” is, as one TripAdvisor poster put it, about as useful as a chocolate teapot. The information gap people actually care about is inside or outside, and almost no listing says.
Why Google and the old listicles keep getting it wrong
Search results for “dog friendly pubs in Dublin” are full of articles from 2015 that were never updated. Policies change when a venue changes owner, when a health inspection is due, or when one bad experience makes a manager say no to everyone. Crowdsourced threads on Reddit and Boards.ie are more current, but they are scattered, unsearchable and full of “if you mean inside, never heard of one”.
How to check in 60 seconds
- Look for recent photos of dogs inside the venue, not just on the terrace. Owners post them; venues rarely do.
- Read the newest reviews that mention a dog. A 2024 “we sat inside with our spaniel” beats a 2016 “dog friendly!” every time.
- If you must ring, ask the specific question: “Can the dog come inside, or is it outside tables only?” The word “inside” changes the answer.
- Have a backup within five minutes’ walk. Being turned away is survivable when the next option is not a drive away.
- Go at a quiet time for the first visit. Lunchtime midweek is far more relaxed than Saturday at 8pm.
