The places that are quiet on purpose
- Business parks and industrial estates on evenings and weekends: wide paths, sight lines, almost nobody.
- Beaches before 8am and after 7pm: long, open, and you can see an off-lead dog coming from 300 metres away.
- Greenways and canal towpaths midweek: linear, predictable, easy to step off.
- Cemeteries, college campuses and church grounds on weekdays (dogs on lead, obviously).
- Secure hire fields: paid by the hour, fully fenced, and the only guaranteed zero-contact option. Ireland has a growing number around Dublin, Wicklow and Cork.
The places that look quiet but aren’t
Anywhere with a car park and a coffee van at 10am on Saturday. Popular trailheads go from empty to chaos in about twenty minutes, and “it’s okay, he’s friendly” is never far behind. If you can only walk at peak times, pick places with multiple entrances and wide paths so you always have an exit.
