Where can I take my puppy before vaccinations are finished?
A new puppy is a lot: a survey of UK owners found more than half felt overwhelmed in the first weeks. One of the most common worries is the socialisation window closing while you are told to keep the puppy off the ground. Before the course is complete
- Carry the puppy. In your arms, a sling or a bag, the puppy can see traffic, buses, prams, bikes and people without touching the ground.
- Sit outside a café with the puppy on your lap. Noise, smells and strangers saying hello are most of what socialisation is.
- Visit friends’ gardens with dogs you know are vaccinated and calm.
- Puppy classes that require proof of the first vaccination are generally run on clean indoor floors for exactly this reason.
First outings once you’re cleared
Keep the first walks short and new, not long. A quiet stretch of beach at 8am, a greenway, a dog-friendly café where the puppy can settle under the table. The aim is a string of small, good experiences, and a tired puppy by lunchtime.
Keep the little wins
Owners who get through the hard weeks often say the same thing: write the little wins down.
